Alejandro Rivas did his bachelor in classical saxophone at the University of Chile at Miguel Villafruela´s saxophone class. He graduated with Cum Laude in 2003.
After that he was teaching saxophone at the same University until he went to The Netherlands in 2009 to do his Master’s in classical saxophone with jazz saxophone as a second subject at Het Utrecht Conservatorium with Johan van der Linden and Marc Scholten. Alejandro has participated and co-founded several musical projects in Chile as well in The Netherlands and recorded many CDs as a soloist and as a chamber musician in classical and jazz music. Some of these musical projects: Cuarteto de saxofones Villafruela (Cofounded in 1997 together with Miguel Villafruela); Unisono Saxophone Quartet (The Netherlands); Zuilens Saxofoon Kwartet (The Netherlands); Kohinoor Saxofoon Kwartet (The Netherlands); Artez/HKU Saxofoon Orkest (The Netherlands); Broken Fingers Quartet (Band mixed with people from Greece, Austria and Chile); Guus Tangelder Big Band (The Netherlands), Rodrigo Ratier Quinteto (Chile-Argentina), Mecha (Chile), among many others. He has performed together with excellent musicians and worked under the direction of very important directors of orchestra such as Dick de Graaf (The Netherlands), Marc Scholten (The Netherlands), Johan van der Linden (The Netherlands), Miguel Villafruela (Chile-Cuba), Laurent Petit-Girard (France), Michal Nesterowicz (Poland). He has been invited to perform with Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile, Orquesta Filarmónica de Chile, Orequesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Concepción and Orquesta de Cámara de Chile which belongs to the Chilean Ministry of Education. He has performed at important venues such as Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, De Doelen in Rotterdam and Vredenburg in Utrecht and play in jazz festivals in Kalamata (Greece) and Agrinio (Greece). He was teacher at the University of Chile and main saxophone teacher at Catholic University of Temuco (Chile).
Now he is more a freelance soloist and chamber music player. He teaches in Liceo Experimental Artístico and Corporación Cultural de Puente Alto. He has three main ensembles now in Chile where he is settled since 2012: Auros Saxophone Duo together with the saxophonist Karem Ruiz which also studied with Miguel Villafruela in Chile and with Willem van Mervijk in The Netherlands. With this ensemble have perform in important contemporary music festivals in Chile premiering new works from Chilean composers and in 2013 they won a project from the Chilean Government to make a tour in The Netherlands. Cuarteto de Saxofones Oriente together with Karem Ruiz at the baritone, Pablo Vega alto sax and Miguel Villafruela at the tenor sax. They have also performed and premiered many works in music festivals. Tricahue, percusión y saxofones, with which have performed in many venues in Chile and recently at the International Contemporary Music Festival in Lima, Perú. They are going to record their first CD during 2016 and are invited to perform at the 8th Festival LEA in Athens, Greece in June of 2016. This ensemble is integrated by two saxophones, marimba, double bass and percussion and includes Chilean percussion instruments such a Chi-Chin which a traditional from the foklore which never used before in classical chamber music.
